SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) –While they are often competitors on the streets, tonight they are united as brothers. Charles Abraham says tow truck driver Curtis Martin worked for him the past three years.

“It could have been any one of us. Wrong place, wrong time. First reaction, of course, is for us to protect our property. It’s a sad case, one man lost his property,” said Abraham.

Martin died while trying to chase down the man accused of stealing his truck. The father of 11 is remembered as a hardworking man who did all he could to provide for his children.

His son Justin Ellison said, “Always work for what you want. He always told me do right for others, you never know what might come in the future.”

Houston police say Jonathan Nguyen, 27, first stole Martin’s truck as the tow truck driver was repossessing a car. Then, as Martin and another man chased after him, Nguyen allegedly struck him with the tow truck as he got out of another car. It all ended after a police chase and crash.

3 people injured during drive-by shooting at Third Ward convenience store, HPD says
The shooting happened outside the Scott Food Mart on Winbern Street, directly across from the Clayton Homes public housing complex.

“It was a drive by shooting, “said HPD homicide detective Katie Clark. “A red Buick pulls up, with a temporary tag on the back. It’s unknown at this time how many suspects were in the vehicle.”

Clark also said the shooting may be gang related.

“Unfortunately in these drive-by shootings, innocent people get hit,” she said.

The man in the wheelchair was partially paralyzed after he was shot several years ago, according to a friend who asked she not be identified, because of fear.

He is a fixture in the neighborhood, often sitting outside the store. “He would go there just to see what was going on, and get some air,” she said. “We call him Poke. He’s not a person who has confrontations. Like you see, he was in a wheelchair.”

Clark said there have been other drive-by shootings in the area in recent months, possibly linked to another gang from southeast Houston.

Video taken from a security camera outside the store is said to have recorded the shooting, as well as the car. The video has been given to Houston police

JERSEY VILLAGE, Texas – A pair of burglars is suspected of breaking into multiple businesses in northwest Harris County, including a restaurant in Jersey Village.

“Someone just came in and broke in,” said Ashley Garza, an employee at Taquaria Arandas, located in the 168000 block of Northwest Freeway in Jersey Village.

Surveillance video from the restaurant shows a man shattering a glass door to gain entry on June 19.

Investigators confirmed to KPRC2 that the man who is seen breaking the glass door was accompanied by another man, who drove the getaway car, according to investigators.

Garza told KPRC2 the burglars made a big mess, but that’s all they did.

“Honestly, what they just did was cause a huge mess by throwing everything around, I guess, looking for money,” Garza said.

They did not take off with any money, Garza said.

Investigators said the duo is suspected of having burglarized four businesses. Three of the businesses are in the city of Jersey Village.

Investigators described the first suspect as being a white male, 6 feet tall, weighing 160 pounds, wearing a black skull cap, a black- and white-striped shirt with a white long-sleeved shirt underneath it, blue pants and blue surgical gloves.

There was not a description available for the second man. It is believed that the pair drove off in a compact silver or gray four-door vehicle.

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
